Germany's Goethe Institute and the German Language Council, guardians of the language, organised a contest to highlight beautiful German words to show that the German language could be every bit as romantic and glamorous as Italian or French. (This is not a joke) Thousands of German speakers from all over the world took part and the winner was chosen from 22,000 entries from 111 countries

Rhabarbermarmelade - 'rhubarb jam' - the runner up
Geborgenheit - 'security' - third place
